Women’s saddles were made with high horns and ornamented with beads and quills while from each one was suspended a large embroidered pendant. Behind the saddle hung a pair of decorated saddle bags with fringes nearly sweeping the ground. The bridle was covered with beadwork and a decorated piece attached to the foretop hung half way down to the nose. No women in the world ever made a better appearance on horseback than did these beautifully dressed women of the Plains.

There is not yet a one standardized sign language in India, so there has been much emphasis on kinship among Deaf women. They often face an intersection of oppression, being Deaf and a woman. It is outrageous that the vast majority of these women never see their abusers or rapists brought to justice.
On January 11, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India S.A. Bobde said female and elderly protesters should return to their homes. The remark angered protesters who saw it not just as an attempt to exclude women from the protest, but also as a warning of violence to come against the protesters. Women are working together to juggle their presence at the protest with the need to care for their families and tend their farms while the men are out protesting. They have also ensured that there is a steady supply of rations and basic necessities at the protest sites. The visualization of female protesters in media reports is important. Reporters covering this story should not lose focus on this critical element.

It’s a country where child marriage, illiteracy, workplace discrimination, physical and emotional violence, and lack of education plague women.
On Wednesday, the day after the gender wall demonstration, Indian media reports emerged of two women under the age of 50 finally managing to visit the sacred shrine. The women were escorted by police into the temple in complete secrecy in the wee hours of the dawn. They were given police protection to avoid the mobs that had kept women at bay previously. When Madhavan uploaded the pictures of protest on her Facebook page, she says it initiated a great deal of interest and sparked discussions on gender equality among her students.
